Cooperative Strategies in International and Italian Liner Shipping

Abstract

By analysing a sample of alliances formed in recent years, this paper presents a descriptive model of the various forms of cooperative relations undertaken by shipping lines. The analysis aims to identify different types of strategic behaviour supported by appropriate variables. The most common strategy adopted by shipping lines is to establish agreements, characterised by a limited sphere of partnership activities and greater flexibility in relations among partners. On the basis of empirical evidence, strategic behaviour which is more responsive to the needs of service differentiation, achieved through more or less broad levels of integration among partners, is hardly ever encountered. These results are accentuated in relation to Italian shipping companies.International Journal of Maritime Economics (2000) 2, 1–16; doi:10.1057/ijme.2000.3
