Abstract

Paul Streeten proposes four reasons to revise old ideas of the role of a university, of higher education, and of research. He suggests that the emphasis on pure research (at least in economics) in the universities of the North has been overdone. He feels that research economists have focused on being published in the top ‘refereed’ journals, and have neglected to put their knowledge to work in areas that are ultimately far more rewarding and important. Development (2002) 45, 107–112. doi:10.1057/palgrave.development.1110389
