Sectoral Restructuring: The East German Shipyards on the Path to the Market Economy

Abstract

The article investigates the transformation process from a centrally planned command economy to a market economy in which state-owned combines--here the East German shipyard industry--had to become independent and private enterprises operating in a free market. This implies the redefinition of structures and behavioral patterns in the enterprises, the search for new markets, the modernization of production and administration and change of the ownership of the enterprises. The adaptation process has been bound up with structural problems on a massive scale for the region generally, as well as high levels of unemployment over the long term and had to take account of the interests and strategies of Western capital as well as the general political conditions in West Germany and Western Europe.
