Abstract

The drafting of the Polish Constitution from 1993 to 1997 spurred attacks against the Communist past of the majority coalition in Parliament. In this context, the secular ideas advanced in most drafts of the constitution were in a weak position, since the very principle of laicization was sometimes seen as a Communist principle. In parallel, the bishops who had used anti-Communist arguments seemed to show an indulgence for aspects of the pre-1989 period, as can be seen in the recently published proceedings of the joint government-episcopacy commission.
