Abstract

L’article présente la vie de Louis Amable Petit avant d’analyser son livre principal publié en 1868. Néo-mercantiliste, Petit pose que la monnaie n’est pas qu’un instrument d’échange mais est avant tout un objet d’accumulation, pour elle-même et comme moyen d’accumulation des autres actifs : c’est la « richesse par excellence ». Ceci l’amène à rejeter la loi de Say et à soutenir le principe de la « balance du commerce ». La recherche effrénée de l’accumulation monétaire conduit inéluctablement à la surproduction et à la répétition des crises commerciales, situation aggravée par le libre-échange.
