L’Internationale protestante d’Alexandre Lombard, dit Lombard-Dimanche

Abstract

Si les protestants français ont eu une influence considérable dans le mouvement pour l’abolition du travail dominical au cours des années 1880 et 1890, c’est l’un de leurs coreligionnaires suisses qui fut à l’origine de cette action d’ampleur. Alexandre Lombard (1810-1887), ancien banquier et homme d’affaires, prit à cœur au début des années 1860 de réaliser ce projet. Ses efforts infatigables (réunions, voyages, brochures) le firent surnommer « l’apôtre du dimanche » : il fonda une Société à Genève en 1861, inspira des fondations similaires en Suisse et en France (la Société française pour l’observation du dimanche est mise en place en 1875), il créa en 1876 une Fédération internationale réunissant ces diverses sociétés. L’originalité du combat protestant en faveur du repos du dimanche est assurément sa dimension internationale. À partir du rôle-pivot qu’a joué A. Lombard, cet article propose de dégager les caractères principaux du projet protestant, économique, social et spirituel.
