Abstract

The first part of this paper draws on analyses of museum spaces thathave been characterised as excluding, oppressive and prejudiced, to consider the spatial techniques and modes of representation and display deployed to these ends. The second section discusses modes of spatial reorganisation which can be identified in many kinds of museum in recent decades. The final section focuses on museums whose primary purpose is linked to the promotion of equality and combating of prejudice, and looks at the particular spatial tactics and modes of display mobilised to achieve these goals. By addressing these issues the paper seeks to contribute to broader philosophical debates about the role and responsibility of cultural institutions.
