The Conflict of Science and Religion: Religious Metaphysics and the Scientific World View as Alternatives

Author

  • Hans Albert

Abstract

A competition between a scientific and a religious world view is only possible with respect to the cognitive core of the religious view and not with respect to specifically religious needs. To analyse the cognitive and emotional problems connected with religions the idea of pure religion is elucidated, which has been used to immunise religious views against scientific criticisms. It is shown that this idea is not tenable and not suited for this purpose. The religious empiricism connected with this idea is refuted. The myth of the framework which is used to defend religious views against criticism is criticised.
