Abstract

As its subtitle suggests, the main body of this book is a narrative history of a group of thirty-six men and women who entered Keio University in Tokyo, Japan, and who nearly all graduated together four years later. During their university days they were members of a student club, the Keio English Speaking Society (KESS), together with several hundred other students; the number of members was reduced to less than one hundred by the time of their graduation. The bond among the fifty or so core members was so strong that since graduation they have continued to meet twice a year for nearly forty years to maintain their friendship.
