Europe between “Clash of Civilisations” and “Unity in Diversity”[Europa intre “ciocnirea civilizatiilor” si „unitate in diversitate”]

More than being a political supra-national construction European Union represents a cultural melting-pot where numerous ethnic, religious and culturally-diverse groups coexist. Due to recent migration waves Europe become more diverse than ever. Such a cultural pluralism creates new premises such as rejection of new migrants or of minorities. Is Europe a „clash of civilizations” or a „unity in diversity” as it was projected to be by its ideological founders? This article tries to clarify which of these attributes describe in a realistic manner the EU now. By presenting the consequences of migration, the impact of cultural pluralism (religious and ethnic diversity) on the interaction between majority and minority we’ll try to understand what is the reality about this subject.
