Abstract

This paper examines the influence of the spatial effects on the productivity growth for Spanish industrial SMEs. In order to carry out this study we use a sample composed by 35.042 firms over the period 1996-2004, distinguishing the technological intensity of the sector. To analyse the space-growth relation, we apply beta convergence models and spatial econometrics techniques. Results confirm the existence of convergence processes for each considered subsample. Besides, for high and high-medium technological SMEs, spatial effects exert a positive influence on their growth. This result indicates the importance in applying regional policies which encourage high technological firms.
