Abstract

The income level not only determines the health care expenditure but also the socioeconomic conditions of a society. These last are a fundamental part in the determination of the needs that are translated in health care demands. In this frame, the discussion about if health care is a necessary or a luxury good, determines our position about the state intervention in its provision and financing. The purpose of this paper is to consider the income elasticity of the health care expenditures, and to use a test of equality between sets of coefficients in linear regressions to know if that parameter changes at different income levels.
