Abstract

Difference-in-difference (DD) models are probably the most used econometric technique to analyze the effect or impact of a change in a system. Since most of its applications use data at the individual level, these models should be considered as part of the microeconometrics field. The main focus of these applications is centered in the analysis of natural experiments or quasi-experiments, where the change under study is considered to be exogenous and the selection of control and treatment groups is a consequence of this change and not a result of a randomized design. In economics, the use of difference-in-difference methods has proven to be widespread. Unfortunately, most of the applications have focused their conclusions on the estimation outcomes and their interpretations, leaving out further consideration of problems affecting the econometric results and performance of the model specification. This paper develops and proposes solutions to the most important econometric problems faced by difference-in-difference techniques: endogeneity, intra-group correlation and autocorrelation.
