Abstract

Following the methodology developed by recent studies, in this article we combine international trade data and exporter countries' income per capita to calculate the degree of sophistication of Spanish manufacturing exports. Our results show that during the 1984-2000 period there has been an increase in the share of high sophistication and medium-high sophistication manufactures in Spanish exports. Moreover, there is a mild improvement in the Spanish position in the ranking of countries according to the degree of the their manufacturing exports' sophistication level, moving from the 18th position in 1984 to the 16th position in 2000. However, during this period, there has not been any convergence between the sophistication level of Spanish manufacturing exports and the most advanced countries' sophistication level.
