Un análisis microeconómico de la demanda de educación superior en España

Abstract

La continuada expansión de la demanda de educación superior que ha experimentado nuestro país ha fomentado la aparición de algunos trabajos que tratan de determinar los factores que afectan a esa demanda. Entre esos factores, nadie parece discutir la influencia que los ingresos familiares tienen en la toma de decisiones de inversión en educación realizada por los jóvenes; sin embargo, las dificultades para acceder al conocimiento de esos ingresos ha supuesto una limitación para las estimaciones empíricas que se han hecho hasta el momento. Este artículo trata de superar esa limitación, utilizando la información que proporciona la primera ola delPanel de Hogares de la Unión Europea para España (INE, 1994). En base a estos datos microeconómicos, se pretende estudiar los factores que incitan a los jóvenes a acceder a la Universidad, estimando para ello un modelo probit bivariante, en el que se incluye un término de corrección del sesgo de selección muestral, para tener en cuenta la posesión previa del diploma que permite el acceso a la misma. Several empirical studies have documented the global trend toward increased demand for higher education in Spain and the factors explaining the education decision of secondary school leavers. However due to data shortcomings in these studies the transition process from secondary to higher education is not controlled for family income, a major determinant of schooling decision. This paper attempts to fill this gap and provides a new piece of evidence for studying private investment in higher education in Spain and the impact of family income in the schooling decision of young people, using information drawn from the first wave of the “Panel de Hogares de la Unión Europea para España” (INE, 1994). Based on this survey we explain the transition phenomena of upper secondary school leavers into higher education by personal endowments, family attributes and the overall characteristics of the labor market at a regional level. Following a common practice in the literature we adjust a bivariate probit choice model with corrections for possible selection bias in school-leaving decisions.
