Abstract

This paper presents an analytical framework to study land and water use in the Flumen-Monegros irrigated area (Huesca). The analytical framework involves a model that uses linear programming and crop simulation techniques, and combines agronomic, economic and policy information. An important feature of the model is the classification of crop acreage in various types of soils, depending on their productive potential. To validate the model, the results on cropland utilization obtained from the model have been compared with actual cropland utilization concluding that both are close. The model is then used to simulate the outcome of the elimination of the direct payments received by farmers.
