Abstract

In Chile, once the student finish primary school, he has to choose between two main types of high school education: scientific and technical education. The final decision between these options depends on a set of family characteristics such as schooling, family background and socio-economic variables. In this paper we propose and estimate a Probit model which permit us to calculate the probability that a primary school student chooses a scientific or technical education. The data is obtained from a survey applied in 1992 to a random sample of 3,616 first degree high school students from both types of education. The main result is that families consider in their final decisions the expected relative wage after graduation, family income level and previous information about high school options, suggesting that they are rational in their decisions. The estimated coefficients associated to the explanatory variables are significant, with the expected signs. Hence, the results of the research suggest that the signals about relative wages given by the labor market are transmitted to the education market.
