Abstract

Cooperation in Research-Development and Innovation is an essential, rapidly evolving, and increasingly important component of the Strategic Partnership established between the European Union (EU) and China in 2003. It is also one of the fundamental pillars of the EU and its Member States’ relationship with this major partner country. Over the last few decades, both the EU and China have undergone major transformations, with considerable bearing on the way in which their already mature partnership, with increasingly focus on cooperation in knowledge creation has developed. This paper aims at sketching the current image of this cooperation in its essentials by analysing the underlying objectives and motivations that justify this partnership from both perspectives. It also looks at its potential benefits, challenges and risks, as well as the results already obtained, and not least its prospects by 2020.
