Every economy of the world intends to provide gainful and high quality employment opportunities to its population. Employment, in fact, is very crucial for the reduction of poverty. Increase in national income can only be obtained when the volume of employment and its average productivity increase. India has, therefore, considered ‘employment’ as a significant policy for its development. Although it has achieved a growth of 8% in the current plan period, India’s progress in the area of employment generation has been far from impressive. This paper aims to critically evaluate the achievements of the Tenth plan with regard to employment generation so far and to come out with suggestions so as to speed up the pace of employment generation in the years ahead.
