Can Tourism Foster The Development Of Indian Economy?

Abstract

Tourism, which has emerged as a major economic activity in most parts of the world during recent years, is also looked upon as a development fostering phenomenon. On its part, the Government of India regards tourism as an engine of growth and employment generator. However, if a large number of citizens of the host country also travel to foreign lands, much of the benefits would be in jeopardy. Similarly, the uncontrolled use of attractions for tourism from abroad can damage or even negate the benefits. Ominous signs casting doubts about the effectiveness of tourism in fostering development seem to be appearing in the horizon. In such a situation, the sensible course would be to promote tourism not as a means of fostering development, but as an attempt to fall in line with the ongoing process of promoting tourism all over the world. Local participation and domestic tourism can be thought of as viable alternatives for sustaining tourism along sound lines.
