The Institutionalists? Reaction to Chamberlin?s Theory of Monopolistic Competition

Abstract

La Theory of Monopolitic Competition di Edwin Chamberlin ? spesso descritta come un?opera che contiene alcune importanti tracce di influenza istituzionalista. Questa circostanza ? confermata dai numerosi riferimenti da parte dello stesso Chamberlin, all?opera di J. M. Clark, Veblen ed altre importanti figure istituzionaliste. Lo scopo di questo paper ? quello di analizzare la reazione istituzionalista alla pubblicazione della Theory of Monopolistic Competition. Ci? che emerge ? che i maggiori esponenti istituzionalisti reagirono in maniera articolata e tutt?altro che acritica, mostrando particolare insoddisfazione per l?opera di Chamberlin tanto sul piano teorico che metodologico. Il paper ? organizzato come segue. La prima sezione presenta le principali implicazioni teoriche contenute nella Theory of Monopolistic Competition. La seconda sezione analizza gli aspetti generali della reazione istituzionalista. La terza e quarta sezione affrontano gli aspetti pi? propriamente teorici della critica istituzionalista a Chamberlin. L?ultima sezione presenta alcune conclusioni di sintesi.
