Abstract

Through a critical review of the recent literature, the present study discusses on the essential nature of the phenomenon, on its dynamics and effects on socioeconomic and ecological systems with a focus on Northern Mediterranean cities. The analysis has mainly focused on the comprehension of the "Mediterranean urban ideal" and how the cities of the region are shaped by certain behaviours and practices of the population. Urban diffusion appears as a dynamic outcome of synergic geo-economic and socio-cultural characteristics. Adopting a comparative approach based on paradigmatic case studies is essential for debating on a multifaceted phenomenon like urban expansion in southern Europe.
