La "rivoluzione verde" di Nazareno Strampelli

Abstract

Nazareno Strampelli (1866-1942) fu il pi? importante genetista agrario italiano durante i primi quattro decenni del ventesimo secolo. Grazie all?applicazione dei principi dell?ibridazione e della genetica mendeliana nel suo programma di miglioramento genetico del frumento avviato a Rieti fin dal 1903, egli cre? numerose variet? di frumento a fusto breve, resistenti alle "ruggini" e a maturazione precoce, molto simili alle cosiddette "variet? ad alto rendimento" ottenute negli anni Cinquanta da Norman Borlaug e ampiamente diffuse in tutto il mondo all?epoca della "rivoluzione verde". Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, le variet? di Strampelli (protagoniste della cosiddetta "Battaglia del grano" lanciata in Italia dal regime fascista nel 1925) furono rapidamente ed ampiamente adottate dai principali Paesi produttori di frumento, giocando un ruolo fondamentale nei rispettivi programmi di miglioramento genetico cos? come nei moderni approcci volti a combattere i nuovi ceppi emergenti di ruggine. Oggi, nonostante il rimarchevole ruolo giocato da quelle variet? italiane sulla produzione mondiale di frumento sia stato ampiamente dimostrato, Nazareno Strampelli continua a non essere adeguatamente riconosciuto n? come il "precursore" della "rivoluzione verde", n? come uno scienziato autentico.
