Eficiencia del gasto educativo. Una evaluación utilizando la función de producción educativa

Abstract

This paper evaluates the possibility of improve the student achievement by increasing the expenditure on education. The analysis employs the education production function methodology. This study uses a particularly rich a data sample from Mexico that was specifically designed to estimate education production functions. According to the results, the expenditure devoted to improve school facilities and to increase the average textbooks by student has a positive effect on student performance. Students under female teacher’s attention outperform students under male teachers care. Increasing teacher’s salary or hiring teachers with higher education and more experience do not improve student achievement.//En este artículo se evalúa la posibilidad de mejorar el rendimiento estudiantil a partir de incrementos en el gasto educativo utilizando el modelo conocido como función de producción educativa. Este método permite identificar los factores o las combinaciones de factores educativos que resultan más eficaces en la producción de este servicio, y de utilidad para hacer recomendaciones y tomar medidas de política educativa. En este trabajo se utiliza una muestra especialmente diseñada para estimar funciones de producción educativas, que comprende alumnos de zonas marginadas de México. De acuerdo con los resultados encontrados, el gasto dedicado a mejorar las instalaciones de la escuela y a modernizar y acrecentar el material didáctico tienen un efecto positivo en el rendimiento escolar. Además los alumnos de maestras obtienen mejores resultados que los alumnos de maestros. Por lo contrario, aumentar el salario a los maestros o contratar maestros con mayor escolaridad y experiencia no ocasiona un mayor rendimiento escolar.
