Abstract

Mexican economic historians have long been interested in the rentability of capital during the Porfirian economic expansion. Research to date has been hampered by limitations on the available data, restricting analysis to a small number of large, publicly traded companies. This paper uses census data to measure rates of return for a broad cross section of cotton textile firms in 1893. In then uses multivariate regression techniques to decompose the factors that influenced firm profitability. The major implications are two-fold. First, the most important determinants of profitability were firm size, raw material quality, and work intensity.
