El tipo de cambio de equilibrio, expectativas y sucesos políticos. Un análisis teórico con base en la experiencia mexicana reciente

Abstract

In order to explain the drop in international reserves and the subsequent devaluation in december 1994, it is assumed that investors were aware of the peso overvaluation and the likelihood of a balance of payments crises. At the same time, these investors were awere that individual decisions taken together might in the short run be enough to keep to Mexican economy functioning, regardless of the long run implausibility of the huge accumaltion of political events in 1994 made evident that the overvaluation would produce a speculative attackon the peso, validating the expectations.// Para explicar la reducción de las reservas internacionales y la subsecuente devaluación de diciembre de 1994 se plantea que los inversionistas estaban conscientes de la sobrevaluación y la posibilidad de una crisis en la balanza de pagos; sin embargo, estaban igualmente conscientes de que las decisiones individuales de inversión tomadas en conjunto podrían al menos en el corto plazo sostener la economía mexicana, a pesar de que ésta mostraba un déficit en cuenta corriente no viable en el largo plazo. Mediante un sencillo modelo analítico se muestra que conforme se fueron sucediendo los hechos políticos de 1994 más evidente resultaba que la sobrevaluación desataría un ataque especulativo contra el peso, lo que terminó por validar expectativas.
