Abstract

We analyze the main characteristics of the European banking system, emphasizing the role the Spanish banking system plays compared to the most representative banking systems in Europe. In particular, we detail the structure of the European banking system in terms of number and variety of banks, size and foreign activity. We then consider the main features of business in the countries studied emphasizing the role deposits and credits play. We conclude analyzing their supervisory setup highlighting the differences among countries and the different steps for a better coordination between national supervisory authorities.
