Abstract

This paper reviews the empirical studies on industrial location and presents an illustration of the results they provide. Usual specifications in the literature are discrete choice models (in which the emphasis lies on the decision agent) and count data models (in which the emphasis lies on the territory). However, the lack of appropriate data in Spain only allows to make inferences from the latter. Estimates from the Catalan municipalities indicate that institutional characteristics such as being capital of a province are clearly relevant whereas agglomeration and location economies barely are.
