Abstract

With increasing internationalisation there is a growing recognition of the role innovation plays in economic growth. With society and industry developing into a knowledge society, effective and balanced means are needed to protect the property rights of that knowledge. The Austrian Patent Office (APO) aims to contribute to these developments by providing services to encourage Austrian companies to use their industrial property rights actively and strategically. Measures are taken to raise public awareness and understanding of industrial property protection and of patent information. While the APO embraces trademarks and designs in its dissemination activities the main thrust of its activities are directed to patents and this article accordingly reflects this situation. These issues are discussed and the dissemination of products and the services available, in the following main categories, are explained: - searches and opinions on a specific technology or trademark, - information products for legal aspects, - free services and priced services, - activities for raising public awareness, - information in the office automation area. The APO's involvement in some European Union projects is also described.
