Hydrochemical soliton due to thermocapillary instability in Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction

Abstract

A soliton-like dynamic wave due to the thermocapillary instability in shallow fluid layers with Belousov-Zhabotinsky chemical reaction was observed. There were two different waves such as ordinary trigger waves and big waves following large hydrodynamic flows. The remarkable characteristics of the big wave were the acceleration of its wave velocity with time, very large traveling velocity and large surface deformation with the big amplitude of hydrodynamic flow velocity. Some of the properties of big waves were similar to those in shallow layers observed in thermocapillary instability. On the accelerating wave the height and the profile of surface deformation were determined by the use of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The temperature difference necessary to induce such a thermocapillary instability was estimated.
