Fluctuating hydrodynamics and Brownian motion

Abstract

The Brownian effects in a suspension of hydrodynamically interacting particles suspended in a Newtonian fluid are considered, with their relation with the fluctuating hydrodynamics theory of Landau and Lifshitz, in which a random stress tensor with known stochastic properties is added to the equations of motion of the fluid. The stochastic properties of the random forces entering in the Langevin equations governing the motion of the particles can then be established using the linearized quasi-state Stokes equations of motion for the fluid phase. The correlation formulae of these random forces are recovered from a purely formal analysis: the presented results work for rigid particles of any size and shape and whatever their number is.
