Rubik's cube: A toy, a galois tool, group theory for everybody

Abstract

Rubik's cube is a most useful tool for the group-theoretician because of the wide range of concepts which can be demonstrated on it. These include subgroups, generators, order, equivalence relations, orbits, systems of imprimitivity and conjugacy. Inevitably consideration of the orbit table of some basic turns leads to a straightforward prescription for restoring a scrambled cube to its original conformation.
