Visualising four-dimensional symmetry

Abstract

The effect of dimensionality (from one to four) on symmetry operations is reviewed, and four-dimensional symmetry is visualised by using three-dimensional projections with a continuously changing colour variable, and (more fully) by means of the hyperstereogram. The fourth dimension is made directly visible by stereoscopic viewing of two three-dimensional projections, and the effect of four-dimensional rotation about a plane can be demonstrated physically when this stereo-pair is rotated.
