Abstract

How do fishermen perceive safety in their workplace and how does this perception affect their awareness of safety? This paper documents how, why and under what conditions Nova Scotian offshore fishermen deny the high level of physical risk in their work. Through statistical analysis seven factors were isolated which appeared to enhance these fishermen's awareness of safety. The implications of these findings for the curriculum of safety courses and other programmes designed to reduce risk at sea are discussed.
