Abstract

The collection, analysis and dissemination of national statistical information can be likened to a manufacturing process. Despite obvious differences, the strength and extent of the analogy is such that it provides a powerful argument for the organisation of the production of statistics along industrial lines. This paper describes the implementation of this approach in Statistics Canada, the Canadian national statistical agency. It discusses the problems which indicated the need for action and the proposed activities of the centralised Production Planning and Control Branch (now in operation).
