Abstract

This study presents the results of a survey of strategic planning systems in 174 US Firms. The sample included different industries from the manufacturing, utilities and insurance sectors. The purpose of this survey was to update our knowledge and to provide new insights on a number of strategic planning parameters such as: planning period, organizational structure of strategic planning, role of the corporate planning staff, and role of the CEO (chief executive officer) in the planning process. Findings indicate that there is a trend towards slightly shorter planning periods. Information on the role of the CEO suggested that CEOs and other corporate line officers are assuming more personal responsibility for strategic planning. In addition, firm characteristics are found to bear strongly upon the role and involvement of both the corporate planning staff and the CEO in the planning process.
