An adaptive approach to shop loading

Abstract

This paper extends previous approaches to loading job shops by simultaneously considering work in progress, inventory levels as well as work load smoothing. The approach is based on a heuristic and is relatively simple in application to a practical manufacturing system. A further enhancement is proposed using a computer search routine to home in on desirable performance. The search routine sets the values of coefficients in the heuristic and so gives a loading procedure that adapts to a particular manufacturing system. The overall results indicate that the approaches proposed give substantial benefits over previous methods.
