The commercialisation of European airports: successful strategies in a decade of turbulence?

Abstract

This paper examines the different commercial activities that have been pursued by airport authorities. It maintains a number of external factors over which individual operators have no control, have prompted a series of strategies designed to increase non-aeronautical revenues. The paper first identifies the factors that have prompted this response. It then details the different commercial strategies that have been followed. Finally, it draws a series of conclusions on the nature of commercial competition within the airport sector.
