Kissing technological frogs: Managing technology as a strategic resource

Abstract

William Matthews1 identifies R&D projects which fall into a gap in the decision-making process. These are medium-term (4-5 year) projects, in between the 'tadpoles' of long-term promise and 'princes' of short-term expectation. The medium-term projects are frogs, and there are lots of them to kiss to find a prince. The gap is filled by a 'box' where technology uncertainty meets resources available. This is an area where new criteria, especially practicality, and a new culture, increase the success rate of kissing technological frogs.
