Soziale Nachhaltigkeitssiegel: Versprechen und Realität am Beispiel von Fairtrade-Kaffee

Abstract

Fairtrade-Siegel sollen die Einkommen und Lebensbedingungen von ProduzentInnen erhöhen und so zu mehr Gerechtigkeit im internationalen Handel führen. Ökonomische Überlegungen und empirische Untersuchungen zeigen jedoch, dass dieses Ziel bei Kaffee nur eingeschränkt erreicht wird: Das Fairtrade-Siegel führt bestenfalls zu geringen Einkommenserhöhungen für die Kaffeebäuerinnen und -bauern. Auch hinsichtlich der Vorteile durch geringere Einkommensschwankungen, Zahlungen, die an die Umsetzung sozialer Projekte gebunden sind, sowie einem besseren Zugang zu Krediten sind die Ergebnisse gemischt. Für die Röstereien und Einzelhandelsunternehmen ist Fairtrade ein weiteres Mittel zur Marktsegmentierung.
