Abstract

German corporations such as Volkswagen, Daimler, Bosch, and Siemens are among the most research intensive in the world. Despite increased expenditure on research and development (R&D) in other countries, the importance of Germany as a location for these companies is not decreasing. Foreign companies in Germany account for a quarter of total spending by the private sector on R&D. They are increasing their expenditure at the same rate as German companies, and their technological priorities are also similar. Overall, at two percent, German companies' spending on R&D in relation to GDP is high by international standards. Not only do German corporations benefit from the opportunities to internationalize R&D, but Germany as a domestic location, which also appears to be very attractive to foreign companies, gains, too.
