Abstract

Since 2003 the start-up subsidy (Existenzgründungszuschuss, publicly better known as "Ich-AG") provides a second means for unemployed people to become self-employed, in addition to the bridging allowance which has already been in place for some time. First evaluation results show that a) both programs attract different target groups, b) the unemployment probability of participants sixteen months after the start of the respective program is considerably lower than the one of a control group of unemployed people not participating in either of the two programs, and c) both programs significantly differ with respect to certain factors affecting the sustainability of self-employment.
