Abstract

Hace tiempo que los historiadores llamaron la atención acerca de la «decadencia española» y del trasfondo económico de dicho proceso. Sin embargo, y pese a que todos se remiten a parecidas explicaciones, no hay total acuerdo en lo que se refiere a la importancia de cada una de ellas.En un trabajo importante y claramente revisionista sobre el conjunto del reino de Castilla, G. Anes expuso que difícilmente se puede hablar de un auténtico proceso de depresión económica, sino más bien de un período de reajustes productivos y demográficos inducidos por la contradicción entre recursos y población a fines del XVI, así como por la reducción de la productividad marginal del trabajo agrario y por las dificultades que esto, y el alza de la renta de la tierra, planteaban a las economías campesinas.
