    Abstract

The dissertation explores the impact on the American political economy of the demise of traditional manufacturing, or deindustrialization. It does so through a case study of New England, one of the first regions of the country to experience the phenomenon when textiles went into decline in the 1920s. The dissertation considers the reasons for and implications of the downsizing of textiles and examines the efforts that were made to deal with the problem. The study combines the methods and concerns of business and economic, political, and labor history.
