Abstract

This paper aims at making a critical appraisal of some of Amartya Sen's most well known contributions to economic analysis and philosophy. First, the concepts of "capability" and "functionings" – central to Sen's theoretical framework – are examined. Secondly, our paper studies Sen's ethical opinions – by recalling the criticisms made to the utilitarian and rawlsian doctrines and by examining Sen's alternative perspective. The paper concludes that Sen's contributions are not as original and promising as is often believed, both on the theoretical level and on the operational level.
