Abstract

As Leon Winiarski demonstrated, the process of formation of a market economy in England lasted for more than 300 years. The result was world’s first economic power of an industrial character and a modern, democratic society. Unfortunately, the rise of capitalism was paid for with enormous costs which were borne by the most vulnerable social strata. The birth of a market economy, which proved to be the most efficient economic system in history, was accompanied by sweat, tears, extreme poverty, and executions of thousand of vagabonds deprived of their property.
