Abstract

After the outbreak of the economic crisis in the first decade of the twenty-first century, there was an increased interest in the theories of crises and business cycles, and anti-crisis policy. Unfortunately, in many of these considerations, not only semantic but also historical issues have been passed over. They are being supplemented by this article where a brief history of economic crises has been elucidated, attempts to determine the origins of the word “crisis” and the term “economic crisis”, and both the negative and positive consequences of these economic phenomena have been made.
