El ahorro de los hogares: una revisión para el período 1970 - 1993

Abstract

“Hay varias razones por las cuales la tasa de ahorro es un tema fundamental, sobre todo cuando se estudian casos de países en desarrollo como Colombia. Entre ellas me parece relevante mencionar la estrecha relación que se ha establecido en la literatura económica entre tasa de ahorro y tasa de crecimiento. El presente trabajo explora algunas posibles causas de la caída en el ahorro interno, y centra el análisis en el comportamiento de los hogares. El objetivo principal es determinar en qué medida el mayor acceso al crédito asociado a la reforma financiera y la masiva entrada de capitales que incrementó la disponibilidad de recursos, propició un crecimiento en el consumo y, por lo tanto una disminución en el ahorro de los hogares. El primer capítulo contiene una breve revisión de las conclusiones establecidas en trabajos recientes respecto a la caída del ahorro interno a partir de 1991. El segundo capítulo describe las tendencias recientes del ahorro y la inversión en Colombia. Adicionalmente, presenta un análisis del comportamiento financiero de los hogares en Colombia a la luz de un esquema de fuentes y usos de recursos. El tercer capítulo estudia la relación entre el mayor acceso al crédito y el comportamiento del consumo y el ahorro de los hogares. La parte inicial del tercer capítulo introduce la argumentación teórica que da sustento al modelo describiendo algunas teorías de consumo y varios desarrollos sobre las aplicaciones de la teoría de las restricciones de liquidez. La última parte del estudio está dedicada a las conclusiones.”
