Abstract

Resumen: El informe del Instituto de Estudios para la Paz de Estocolmo (SIPRI) sobre el aumento del gasto militar en América Latina, suscitó preocupaciones por una supuesta carrera armamentista en la región. Empero, no existen razones para evocar tal posibilidad. En respuesta, el presente artículo pretende poner a consideración del lector algunos elementos clave a tener en cuenta para el estudio del gasto militar en América Latina y en Colombia. El artículo presenta el dilema de "canones versus mantequilla"; reflexiona acerca del informe del SIPRI y finalmente, se propone la forma en que se debe abordar el estudio del Gasto en Defensa y Seguridad en Colombia.
