Quince falacias funestas del fundamentalismo financiero

Abstract

En este artículo el profesor Vickrey muestra que la política económica actual se basa en análisis incompletos, supuestos contrafactuales y analogías falsas. El artículo examina en detalle quince falacias que en conjunto, llevan a políticas que, en el mejor de los casos, generan un letargo económico con tasas de desempleo cercanas al 5 ó 6 por ciento. Para el profesor Vickrey, esta situación es perjudicial por cuanto reduce la producción potencial entre un 10 y un 15 por ciento aún si la pérdida se reparte en forma equitativa entre toda la población; pero cuando se traduce en un desempleo de 10, 20 y hasta 40 por ciento para los grupos desfavorecidos, los perjuicios adicionales en términos de pobreza, ruptura familiar, ausencia y deserción escolar, ilegitimidad, uso de drogas y crímenes llegan a ser muy graves. De modo que estas políticas se asemejan a un "incendio homicida premeditado" y, aún peor, cuando se llevan hasta sus últimas consecuencias, en busca de un "presupuesto equilibrado", pueden conducir a una profunda depresión.
